Gov’t Not Supporting Miss Liberia Wokie Dolo: She Is Still Owed Prized Money For Winning The Miss Liberia Crown In January 2017!

According to the Liberian Observer Miss Liberia, Wokie Dolo, has publicly admitted for the first time that she has not received a dime from the government of Liberia since winning the crown in January 2017. Queen Dolo won the crown last year after beating 10 contestants by outperforming them with her poise, confidence, and intelligence. Wokie Dolo, responding to criticisms in a lengthy Facebook post that she has not done much to advocate for the well-being of children, alleged that since winning the crown last year, neither the government nor the organizer has given her the prize money. She stated that the government has never supported any of her trips to international pageants, where she participated and won awards thereby bringing pride to the country.
Wokie Dolo :
“I started my reign with no budget and uplifted the flag of Liberia positively. I have undertaken projects and contributed to society through my personal account. With the help of God, my manager, sponsors, and my team, we have been able to redefine the role of Miss Liberia through our positive contributions towards the growth and development of Mama Liberia.
“I have been working with less fortunate kids since I was 15 years old. I’ve sponsored persons with disabilities, youths, and orphans from my home of origin and across without a crown. I don’t have to be rich before giving out to my people. I have shared every little I have with them because we all deserve happiness! I’ve inspired thousands of people through my humanitarian services”.
“And my license fees to all the international pageants I attended were paid for by my manager without government intervention. I went to those pageants with personal preparations by providing my own costumes and everything a beauty queen needs,” Miss Liberia, Wokie Dolo, narrated.
In order to solve the problem for the next queen, Dolo said she launched an endowment fund with the target of US$50,000 to rent an office space for her (the next queen) and to also pay for international license and costume, “but unfortunately, only US$3,000 was raised, which cannot cover half of the proposed expenses.”

Caldwell Residents Protest in Demand of Electricity

| According to the Liberian Observer The Township of Caldwell was yesterday a scene of chaos when residents took to the streets protesting having to go over two years without electricity in their area. The residents, who blocked the major road in the area leaving motorists stranded, chanted ‘solidarity songs’ in unison as they created a traffic gridlock that lasted all day Monday. But authorities of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and the Liberia National Police (LNP) have called for a roundtable discussion between the leadership of the protesters and the LEC management to find a common ground to the protesters’ demand for power supply. The protest also paralyzed commercial activities in the area as the protesters accused the erstwhile Unity Party government of not responding to their complaints over the years. According to the protesters, they have on previous occasion paid bills for community supply of electricity to owners of generators, which they said is not ‘even dependable.’ |

One of the protesters, Fofee Karneh, said the residents have made several efforts to the LEC management over the lack of power supply, but to no avail. Karneh accused the LEC of being insensitive to the plights of the residents, because he feels that the power outage in the community has negatively affected commercial activities in the area to the extent that many businesses are being affected.
He added, “We have been in total darkness for over two years now, and that the LEC has not responded to our plights.”
“Residents of other communities including those in some parts of Johnsonsville, New Kru Town, and as far as St. Paul Bridge are enjoying electricity, but for us in Caldwell, the story is totally different, and so we are pleading with the LEC to connect us,” Karneh said.

British-Liberian artist Lina Iris Viktor says that the rapper’s video with SZA, made for the upcoming movie “Black Panther,” used the black and gold designs from her paintings without permission. A letter from her lawyer Christopher Robinson to Top Dawg Entertainment said that Viktor was contacted twice about using her work in connection to “Black Panther,” but she declined both times. Why would they do this? It’s an ethical issue, because what the whole film purports is that it’s about black empowerment, African excellence — that’s the whole concept of the story. And at the same time they’re stealing from African artists,” Viktor told the The New York Times which first reported the news. She is demanding a public apology as well as a licensing fee for the appearance of the “Constellation” series geometric designs as the background of a room where Lamar walks among models decked out in gold. Vitkor said she was alerted by a friend who noticed what appeared to be her work after the video came out last week. Lamar, Top Dawg and Disney, which is putting out “Black Panther,” have not yet responded to the allegations.

President George M Weah To Visit France!

According to DM, Liberia's new president, the ex-footballer George M. Weah, will visit France later this month and meet President Emmanuel Macron, the Elysee Palace announced Thursday. "This will be George Weah's first trip to Europe since his election", a statement said, calling his victory "an exemplary democratic change of power". Weah, 51, took over from Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who over 12 years steered the West African country away from the trauma of a civil war but failed to ease dire poverty. Weah's trip from February 20 to 23 will be dedicated to "the challenges facing Liberia, especially economic growth and youth employment" as well as the "role of sport as a factor of development", the French presidency said. It will also be an opportunity for Macron "to start a partnership with a president who embodies the new generation of heads of state, who with France, wishes rebuild relations between France, Europe and Africa". Last week, France added Liberia and The Gambia to the 17 priority countries of French development aid. Weah played for top-flight teams in France, Italy and England in the 1990s and was crowned FIFA player of the year.
