Photo: President George Weah Full Inaugural Speech: Liberia’s New President, George Weah, Promises Greater Freedoms and Equality!

According to FPA President George Manneh Weah has promised to work with the Liberian Legislature to provide clarity on some fundamental issues including land rights, freedom of speech and how national resources and responsibilities are going to shift from Monrovia to other parts of the country.
“The people expect better cooperation and more action from their government.  We can do better, together,” he said.
The international soccer star was sworn into office on Monday at midday.
He replaces Africa’s first female President and Nobel Laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who led the country for the past 12 years.
He contested against Madam Sirleaf in 2005 but lost in a runoff election.
In 2011, Weah allowed former UN Staff, Cllr. Winston Tubman to lead his political party – Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) – to elections while he (Weah) ran as vice standard bearer.
The transition marks the first of its kind in 74 years since a democratically elected government handed power over to another elected government.
Speaking at his inaugural ceremony, President Weah recalled that Liberia is a country founded by men and women who left the United States in search of freedom and equality, however, “that vision of freedom, equality and democracy has not yet been fully realized.”
For President Weah, the Inaugural Ceremony signalled more than a peaceful transition from one democratic administration as it marks a transition from one generation to a new generation.
“It is indeed a confirmation that democracy exists in Liberia, and that, it is here to stay,” he said.
“We have arrived at this transition neither by violence, nor by force of arms.  Not a single life was lost in the process.
Blood should never be the price tag for democracy. Rather, this transition was achieved by the free and democratic will of the Liberian people, guaranteed by the rule of law,” he added.
He assured the over 35,000 Liberians and international guests who trooped the stadium to witness the historic event that he would lead the country from division to national unity and toward a future of hope and prosperity.
“I have here taken an oath before you, and before the Almighty God, to uphold our constitution and to preside over this Government and this country to the best of my abilities,” said.
Bridging the Gap
The new President promised to directly impact the country’s poor and narrow the gap between the poor and the rich by ensuring that public resources do not end up the pockets of government officials.
“I further believe that the overwhelming mandate I received from the Liberian people is a mandate to end corruption in public service.  I promise to deliver on this mandate,” he said.
He urged his officials of government (whom he is yet to name) to put the country’s interest above selfish interests.
Weah: “It is time to be honest with our people.  Though corruption is a habit amongst our people, we must end it.
"We must pay civil servants a living wage, so that corruption is not an excuse for taking what is not theirs.
Those who do not refrain from enriching themselves at the expense of the people – the law will take its course.  I say today that you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
 Ready for Business
President Weah called on investors to consider investing in the country’s private sector.
“To the private sector, I say to you that Liberia is open for business.  We want to be known as a business-friendly government,” he said.
According to him, his government would provide an environment that will be conducive for the conduct of “honest and transparent business”.
“We will remove unnecessary regulatory constraints that tend to impede the establishment and operation of business in a profitable and predictable manner,” he said.
 Protecting Liberian Businesses
President Weah guaranteed Liberian owned businesses that they would be protected from marginalization.
Weah: “We cannot remain spectators in our own economy. My government will prioritize the interests of Liberian-owned businesses and offer programs to help them become more competitive and offer services that international investors seek as partners.”
Changing the Structure of the Economy
Weah said he is poised to restructure the economy through huge investments in agriculture, infrastructure, human capital and technology.
“We hope our international development partners will assist us in this transformation,” he said.
Collaboration with International Community
The new President thanked ECOWAS for standing with Liberia through the civil war.
“Many of our West African brothers and sisters shed their blood for Liberians during our conflict.  This is a debt Liberians will never be able to repay,” he said.
He also extended appreciation to the United Nations for its role in Liberia.
He said, UN peacekeeping missions have ensured unbroken peace within the country’s borders and will soon demonstrate their confidence in country by transitioning its task from peacekeeping programs of UN organizations which will continue in key sectors such as education, health, and agriculture.
Weah: “Ending a peacekeeping mission successfully is something in which all Liberians and her partners should take great pride."
"  We thank all member countries of the United Nations for your support and I promise to continue to build on the success that we have achieved together.”
He also thanked the United States for its longstanding strong historic relationship with Liberia.
Weah: “To the European Union, I say thanks to you for your strong partnership with Liberia.
"European aid has provided critical support for Liberia’s recovery from war, and this continuous support will be important as we forge a new path of transformation.”
“Without Europe George Manneh Weah would not be standing here delivering this inaugural address as the 24th President of the Republic of Liberia.
It was my success in European football that enabled me to give back to my beloved country.
Europe will always have a special place in my heart, and, as President, I intend to strengthen my relationship with the European community for the benefit of all Liberians.”
He also appreciated the People’s Republic of China for emerging as one of Liberia’s most dependable allies. He promised that his government will uphold and support the “One-China Policy”.
“It is my hope that Chinese-Liberian relationships will grow stronger during my tenure as President,” he said.
“The Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, built by the Chinese, where this Inaugural Ceremony is being held, is where I gained my exposure to the football world.
It does not only stand as a monument of Chinese friendship toward Liberians, but it also stands as a symbol of peace and reconciliation for the Liberian people.
During our civil conflict, this was a venue that brought opposing factions together during national matches, effectively reconciling them to a single national purpose, Liberia.
“And once again today, we stand at this same venue united for one purpose: Liberia.
This is time that we put away our political differences to work together in forging a New Liberia, where the affordability of all goods and services will not longer be a luxury to the privileged, but rather a right for all Liberians.”
Weah further thanked the African Union and other bi-lateral and multi-lateral partners of Liberia including the World Bank, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Norway, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, amongst others.
Not Eloquent Speeches, Good Decisions
President Weah recognizes that he has not been a good public speaker and he said his contribution to Liberia would not lie in the eloquence of his speeches, rather through the quality of the decisions he would make over the next six years to advance the lives of Liberians.
“I intend to construct the greatest machinery of pro-poor governance in the history of this country."
"  I will do more than my fair share to meet your expectations.  I ask you to meet mine, for I cannot do it alone,” he said.
